The Bentley Continental GT Speed
600bhp i an awful lot of power, yet that is exactly the output offered by Bentley’s new Continental GT Speed.
It enables this stunning new coupé to reach 202mph, the first Bentley to be able to exact 200mph. It also results in a 0-62mph of just 4.5 seconds, 2 seconds less than the standard Bentley Continental GT, itself a very rapid car.
However, there’s more to the GT Speed than just performance. Ride, height and steering have all been worked upon by Bentley’s Chassis technicians and the new Coupé exhibits slightly sharper steering, while ride is improved too. Drive from the smooth 6.0 litre, twin turbo W12 cylinder engine is via a six-speed automatic gearbox with gear changes being accomplished via paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The GT Speed is, of course four wheel drive.
You will have to look hard to spot the external differences over the Continental GT. The slightly re-profiled grille is finished in dark chrome as are the mesh air inlets in the front bumper. The lower ride height is visible to the aficionado.
Inside the differences are more obvious. ‘Mulliner driving specification’ is standard in the Speed. This includes quilted leather and embroidered Bentley logos on the seat. The three-spoke steering wheel is smaller than the GT’s and there are ‘Speed’ badges on the kickplates.
Inspired by the sporting character of Bentley’s ‘speed’ models from the 1920’s the new GT Speed offers more refinement, more exhilaration and even more of an experience.
Priced at a shade under £140,000, with an official fuel consumption of 11.2mpg in the urban cycle (CO2 emissions 396g/Km), it’s a pity that so few of us will, in fact, experience the Bentley GT Speed.
